Dear friends,

we are greatly saddened to share that David Ilten ’60, President of the Yale Club of Germany, passed away on April 20 after a brief illness. David was president of our Yale Club for over 40 years and was beloved for his warmth and gentleness of character and his tireless commitment to Yale. For decades he has been the face of the Yale Club of Germany—traveling to New Haven for AYA meetings, serving as liaison for professors and singing groups, interviewing countless prospective students, sharing all his bits of Yale trivia, and welcoming new arrivals to the Yale community in Germany with kindness and warmth. He will be greatly missed, but will certainly remain with us in spirit.

Our member Robert Dickler has graciously placed an announcement in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (überregional) on Friday, April 26, 2019 in accordance with David’s wish and is asking other members for contributions towards the costs (see below for his personal message).

Members wishing to contribute to the club in memory of David and members with recurring contributions should note that our club bank account has changed. Once a new club leadership is in place, a proper Vereinskonto will be opened. In the meantime, please use the following account info:
Bank (Kreditinstitut des Begünstigten): n26 Bank
Payee (Begünstigter): Hans Christian Siller
IBAN: DE76 1001 1001 2621 3219 84

Yet another way of honoring David would be to build upon his decade-long tireless work for the Yale club. Are you interested in facilitating club events in your area? Do you want to be our next newsletter editor? Would you like to become a voting member of the e.V. or serve on the board? Get in touch with us - the club is always welcoming members to take a more active role.

Dear Members of the Yale Club of Germany,.

we are all saddened by the loss of our President, Dr. David F. Ilten on April 20, 2019.

We expressed our loss in accordance with David’s wish to have an announcement of his passing in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (überregional).

In view of need for timely action, I personally took responsibility for drafting and placing the notice which appeared in the FAZ on Friday, April 26, 2019. You can view the notice on this website operated by the FAZ Media.

The cost was approximately EUR 1.500 even after a 50% Discount for Vereine. I paid on behalf of the the Yale Club of Germany. I would greatly appreciate your sharing the cost. I volunteer to assume EUR 500 of the expense; however, if there is no response, then I assume legal responsibility (I have already issued the payment instruction).

If 250 members contribute, it would be kind if I were able to book a reimbursement of € 4; if 25 active members contribute, then € 40 would be appropriate. Any exess of the amount required will be contributed to the treasury of the Yale Club of Germany.

I do not have the time during the week to set up a new bank account for this purpose. Thus I will provide reimbursement details extracted from the account from which the notices was paid. On July 4, I will post a list of donations on Facebook in the Yale Club of Germany group.

If you provide an email to me giving me notice of your payment, I will send a confirmation notice as soon as I receive the information on my bimonthly account statement from the Norddeutsche Landesbank, Bremen.

Account Details:

I appreciate your kind consideration on this sad occasion.

Best regards,

Robert Dickler
