SUMMARY:The Fate of Democracy in a Radicalising World
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Munich for an evening with Cynthia Miller-Idriss. As
always\, there will be an opportunity to network at an open-bar reception
following the talk.\n\nIf you cannot be with us in Munich\, this talk wil
l be live-streamed and stay online on the Amerikahaus YouTube channel.\nAd
mission is free\, registration requested HERE\nTo watch on the YouTube liv
estream click HERE\nThe signs of growing far-right extremism are all aroun
d us. As the 2024 United States presidential election approaches\, communi
ties across America and around the globe are still struggling to understan
d how so many people are being radicalized and why they are increasingly a
ttracted to violent movements.\nCynthia Miller-Idriss will discuss how tom
orrow’s far-right nationalists are being recruited in surprising places\
, from college campuses and mixed martial arts gyms to clothing stores\, o
nline gaming chat rooms\, and YouTube cooking channels. Instead of focusin
g on the how and why of far-right radicalization\, Miller-Idriss seeks ans
wers in these physical and virtual spaces where hate is cultivated. She de
monstrates how young people on the margins of our communities are targeted
in these settings\, how the path to radicalization is a nuanced process o
f moving in and out of far-right scenes throughout adolescence and adultho
od\, and reveals innovative strategies we can use to combat extremist radi
calization.\nDr. Cynthia Miller-Idriss is a professor at the American Univ
ersity in Washington\, D.C.\, where she directs the Polarization and Extre
mism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) in the Center for University Exce
llence (CUE). She has testified before the U.S. Congress\, has briefed the
U.N. Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee\, and frequently serves
as a keynote speaker and expert panelist on trends in white supremacist a
nd far-right extremism to global academic and policy communities. She appe
ars regularly in the media as an expert source and political commentator\,
including recent appearances on CNN with Fareed Zakaria\, PBS News Hour\,
MSNBC Hardball with Chris Matthews\, The Today Show\, and Good Morning Am
erica as well as in global media outlets in over a dozen countries. Her mo
st recent book is Hate in the Homeland: The New Global Far Right (Princeto
 n University Press\, 2020).
