 n of support for establishment parties in favor of populist and even anti-
 system ones in so many countries?  Ian Shapiro will answer that question\
 , explain why many of the proposed remedies either have no effect of make 
 things worse\, and go to outline changes that would have a better chance o
 f restoring democratic confidence. \nIan Shapiro is Sterling Professor of
  Political Science at Yale University. He has written widely and influenti
 ally on democracy\, justice\, and the methods of social inquiry. A native 
 of South Africa\, he received his J.D. from the Yale Law School and his Ph
 .D from the Yale Political Science Department where he has taught since 19
 84 and served as chair from 1999 to 2004. \nShapiro also served as Henry R
 . Luce Director of the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies
  from 2004-2019. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Scienc
 es and the American Philosophical Society\, and a member of the Council on
  Foreign Relations and the National Academy of Social Insurance. \nShapiro
  is a past fellow of the Carnegie Corporation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\
 , and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He has hel
 d visiting appointments at the University of Cape Town\, Keio University i
 n Tokyo\, and Nuffield College\, Oxford. \nHis most recent books are  Po
 litics Against Domination (Harvard University Press\, 2016)\,  Responsib
 le Parties: Saving Democracy from Itself  (Yale University Press\, 2018)
  with Frances Rosenbluth\, and The Wolf at the Door: The Menace of Econom
 ic Insecurity and how to Fight It  (Harvard University Press\, 2020) with
  Michael Graetz. His current research concerns the relations between democ
 racy and the distribution of income and wealth. \nModerator Dr. Dominik T
 olksdorf focuses in his research on the intersection of US domestic politi
 cs\, foreign policy\, and relations with Germany and the EU. He is current
 ly with the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for the Future of Europe at the Ge
 rman Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin. Prior to that\, he ser
 ved for many years as Program Director for Foreign and Security Policy at 
 the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Washington\, DC\, and worked at several t
 hink tanks in the US and Europe before that.
