Dear Yalies in Berlin,

the evening with Paul Bracken has had to be cancelled due to his wife’s injury (she broke her hand and needed to fly home for surgery.) I have just received this update from Diane Morrisey at the YAA:

It appears we have another update to the Yale faculty event in Berlin. I want to apologize for any inconvenience to the local alumni participants, but my colleagues in Lifelong Learning and Travel having been working diligently to try to save the trip to Berlin.

Professor Paul Bracken will not be available to give a virtual lecture on Thursday, October 19, 2023, as previously thought.  The Yale Lifelong Learning and Travel has arranged to have Professor Thomas F. Remington ’78 Ph.D. speak.

The new time will be 3:30-5:30 pm on 10/18/23.

The location will still be the Westin Grand Berlin Hotel.

Professor Remington will give a lecture entitled “The Wonder Years: Rebuilding Germany after the War.”

Thomas F. Remington is Visiting Professor of Government at Harvard and Goodrich C. White Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Emory University. Dr. Remington is author of the recently published book, The Returns to Power: A Political Theory of Economic Inequality (Oxford, 2023) as well as numerous books and articles on Russian politics, including The Politics of Inequality in Russia (Cambridge, 2011) and Presidential Decree Power in Russia: A Comparative Perspective (Cambridge, 2014). His current research addresses the problem of economic inequality in the United States, Russia, China and Germany. He was chair of the political science department at Emory from 2001-2007.

He has been a member of the Boards of Directors of the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research and the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies.

Apologies for the confusion here, but hats off to the team at LL and T for salvaging the trip. Please let me know if you would like to join this event. RSVP to president@yaleclub.de

All best from Munich,

Bartley
