Dear Members of the Yale family in Germany,

Happy Fall - Back to School - Oktoberfest - Autumn equinox! As we head into the season of hot cups of tea and mountain hikes, rainy afternoons with a good book and pumpkin spice, we have a lot going on with the club. As always, we keep the Yale Club of Germany Facebook group updated, but the best place to see updates is our website.

We hope you can join us either for the in-person events, or online as appropriate. If you'd like to organize something in your hometown, we are happy to help organize - just reach out.

Boola Boola,

Bartley

The War in Ukraine: Where do we go from here?

Wednesday, September 28th 6:00pm CEST

With the Russian war in Ukraine entering its eighth month, what are the prospects for resolution? Can either Russia or Ukraine “win” the war in any meaningful way? Do the US and Europe have enough domestic political resolve to continue supporting Ukraine with critical resources as they face the possibility of warfare persisting into a second winter?

Join Timothy Snyder, the Richard C. Levin Professor of History and Global Affairs, and Arne Westad, the Elihu Professor of History and Global Affairs and Director of International Security Studies, and Serhii Plokhii, the Mykhailo S. Hrushevs’kyi Professor of Ukrainian History, Harvard University, for a discussion of the war’s future implications for Ukraine, Russia, and global order.

The event, which is hosted by International Security Studies, will be held in person and live-streamed

This event is a partnership with the Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft e.V.

Covering a century of tyranny, in her latest book, NYU Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat examines how authoritarians use propaganda, virility, corruption, and violence to stay in power, and how they can be defeated. She looks at larger autocratic patterns, like the toll of corruption on militaries and how late-stage autocrats behave, to help us contextualize current world events. The story of the strongman, rife with tragedy, also offers lessons in hope and resiliency.  It urges us to invest in democracy and protect it rather than take our freedoms for granted.
