Happy Summer to all in Germany's Yale family!

I am pleased to forward an invitation for those in Berlin from the German Stanford Association, as well as reminders of two beer garden evenings in Munich this week. In addition, we have two exciting save-the-dates from Munich Dialogues on Democracy for October - the events will be hybrid, so even if you cannot join us in person in Munich you can watch online.

I wish you all a healthy, peaceful summer full of adventures with friends and family,

Bartley

Cordial invitation to 2022 summer event on July 10th in Berlin

Dear Ivy Circle members, alumni, students, friends and family.

As our soul mates and dear partners in the German US alumni community I hereby cordially invite you to this year’s grand Summer Garden event of the German Stanford Association open to all our international friends on July 10th, starting at 4pm at a newly opened gorgeous location on the Halensee lake in Berlin's Grunewald neighborhood.

The place is lovely and a "must-go" for us with its inviting lawn, the lake Lagunita/ Boston river-type views (and even swim if you like), and the US trained chef of culinary arts.

The topic is quite a "must-attend" with Prof. Jenny Suckale giving us an exclusive preview of the soon-to-be-openend Stanford School of Sustainable Technologies. The endowment of 1.6 bn will make sure that this institution will leave a mark on the course of the world.

Please find details and registration here: https://groups.stanford.edu/events/25289 Please inform my Board colleague Jon for student and new grad discount. The GSA board and I am looking forward to meeting AS MANY AS POSSIBLE of you on this Sunday afternoon four weeks from now. Please make sure to register early, overall capacity is limited as a matter of fact. If you are sure already that you want to come, register today.

Heinrich

Prof. Dr. Heinrich Arnold, President German Stanford Association

Covering a century of tyranny, in her latest book Ruth Ben-Ghiat examines how authoritarians use propaganda, virility, corruption, and violence to stay in power, and how they can be defeated. She looks at larger autocratic patterns, like the toll of corruption on militaries and how late-stage autocrats behave, to help us contextualize current world events. The story of the strongman, rife with tragedy, also offers lessons in hope and resiliency.  It urges us to invest in democracy and protect it rather than take our freedoms for granted.
