In Erasing History, Yale professor of philosophy Jason Stanley exposes the true danger of the authoritarian right’s attacks on education, identifies their key tactics and funders, and traces their intellectual roots. He illustrates how fears of a fascist future have metastasized, from hypothetical threat to present reality. He illustrates that hearts and minds are won in our schools and universities—places that democratic societies across the world are now ill-prepared to defend against the fascist assault currently underway.

This compact book is incredibly relevant to current events - and only about a five hour listen if you prefer. You do not have to read the book to attend, but if you do and would like to submit questions ahead of time for Prof. Stanley, please send them to info@dialoguesondemocracy.com with "Question for Prof. Stanley" in the subject.

"...from the United States and Hungary to India and Turkey--an education system is the foundation upon which a political culture is built. Authoritarians have long understood that when they wish to change the political culture, they must begin by seizing control of education."

A part of our Munich Dialogues on Democracy Book Group series, this webinar is open to all and will not be recorded.

Jason Stanley is an American philosopher who is the Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. He has accepted an appointment at the University of Toronto starting in fall 2025. He is the author of six books, including How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them and How Propaganda Works. Stanley is a member of the Justice Collaboratory at Yale Law School and serves on the board of the Prison Policy Initiative. He writes frequently about authoritarianism, democracy, propaganda, free speech, and mass incarceration for outlets including the New York Times, The Guardian, the New Republic, and Project Syndicate.
